Anna Lee Steed is a painter whose primary interest is in color. Whether painting still life, seascapes or abstracts…color composition is foremost in her mind. She states, “My initial inspiration to paint came on a visit to Point Lobos many years ago. It is an incredibly beautiful coastal park, just south of Carmel, California. The heightened greens and blues of the water combined with the rugged orange cliffs punctuated by Monterey Pines and cypress trees create unlimited scenes of extreme beauty.” It is no wonder that Anna Lee counts many of the Early California Impressionists as some of her favorite painters. “I love much of the work done in California around 1900 through 1930 by artists such as Guy Rose, William Wendt, Edgar Payne and Franz Bischoff. They were American Impressionists, whose work had more solidity than the earlier French Impressionism. I like the more intense use of color that these painters developed in their work after living and painting in California.”

Anna Lee has taken workshops with a number of well known contemporary California landscape painters such as Camille Przewodek, Randall Sexton, Brian Blood and Laurie Kersey. But, her primary influence has been Michael Linstrom, an internationally collected colorist who lives locally. “Michael is a gifted teacher. He has coached many talented artists, bringing their work up to the professional level. I feel very fortunate to have met him when I did.” In 2007, Anna Lee began exhibiting with “The Linstrom Group”, an association of colorist painters that have studied with Michael Linstrom.

For the past two years, Anna Lee has become much more involved in teaching art. “I began to notice at the workshops that I had attended that many of the students had trouble mixing the subtle colors they saw before them in nature. I decided to offer a sort of “color boot camp” where I would teach how to mix colors and the basics of color composition.” This has grown into an active teaching program. “In 2008 I will be offering “Getting Started In Oil Painting”, a course for beginning painters and “It’s All About Color”, which is a series of workshops for advanced beginners and intermediate students. There has been a great deal of interest in these classes and it looks like there may be workshops in Monterey and Santa Cruz Counties as well as Santa Clara and San Mateo!” Interested parties should contact Anna Lee directly at 831-338-9496 or see her website: www.ParagonFineArtGallery.com .
